DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Geotechnical Laboratory Supervisor, you will be working responsible for coordinating or managing the activities of a Geotechnical Laboratory.This includes ensuring that the laboratory testing services are conducted in a safe manner in accordance with McIntosh Petrry's Health and Safety policy and consistent with quality protocols dictated by CCIL, MTO and CNSC.  The Laboratory Supervisor shall assume responsibility to fully manage lab operations, to maintain consumable materials inventory, to maintain, repair or replace and calibrate the laboratory equipment and to minimize the waste. Additional duties will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Performs construction and geotechnical related laboratory testing;
  • Provides supplemental operating policies and procedures unique to the laboratory to ensure that the testing services are accomplished consistent with all applicable standards and the geotechnical team’s quality policy;
  • Provides annual feedback on the cost analysis of laboratory testing cost per test item for each new fiscal year;
  • Ensures that laboratory personnel are properly trained, supervised and equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to ensure their personal safety in the office and laboratory;
  • Supervises or monitors laboratory activities to ensure that the work is executed on time and in accordance with the client and project requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards;
  • Evaluates the performance of all employees within the laboratory and assists them in their professional development and growth, consistent with company policies and procedures;
  • Supervises the efficient utilization of facilities and equipment assigned to his or her area and makes requests for additional equipment and facilities as needed;
  • Oversees calibration and maintenance of the laboratory equipment;
  • Ensures the proper organization and appearance of the laboratory area for which he/she is responsible, including keeping the area and equipment clean and uncluttered;
  • Supervises the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that health and safety documents, laboratory protocols, calibration certificates, staff certificates and any other documents needed for lab operation, and will be requested upon each inspection by authorities, are in place and maintained up to date;
  • To oversee lab financials, expenditure, revenue, and profit;
  • To prepare test reports;
  • Ensures that laboratory personnel follow company administrative policies such as time-sheet submission, expense reports, time-off request and etc. when full-time personnel assigned to the lab; 
  • To work efficiently with Practice Area Leads to share the staff between field and the lab and to ensure the assigned work is delivered in an efficient and timely manner;
  • To collaborate with the Manager, Geotechnical Division to promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. 

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • High school diploma or equivalent. College certificate in areas relevant to construction is an asset;
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience performing field and/or laboratory tests on construction and geotechnical materials;
  • Relevant CCIL certifications of training for aggregate, concrete, and asphalt testing as well as CNSC certificate for TDG;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with others;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle that has valid registration and insurance
  • Ability to travel throughout Ontario
