DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a member of our Geotechnical team, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Carry out site investigation visits to review site conditions;
  • Prepare cost estimates and proposals for Geotechnical Investigations and inspection testing (both Private and Public sectors); 
  • Specify site investigation and laboratory testing requirements for Geotechnical Design; 
  • Perform long and short term slope analysis;
  • Prepare Soil Investigation Reports and follow peer review process as well as sign & stamp reports 
  • Attend site and office meetings; 
  • Provide field decisions for geotechnical issues; 
  • Design low, medium and complex foundation designs as well as prepare and review concise geotechnical reports complete with pertinent recommendations for a variety of projects (stamping such reports upon receipt of P. Eng. designation by PEO);  
  • Liaise with contractors including conducting site inspections/supervision, and QA/QC inspections; 
  • Liaise with Environmental and other departments on joint proposals/projects; 
  • Coordinate for joint work between all foundation departments (Ottawa, Kingston and Oakville)
  • Provide Geotechnical Certification, for low and high-rise, commercial and industrial buildings;; 
  • Prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables related to below grade shoring and foundation design related projects; 
  • Oversee the work of engineering interns and technologists and provide guidance and mentoring; 
  • Provide Geotechnical Design training to existing Geotechnical Staff as instructed by the Geotechnical Manager;
  • Participate in Business Development and Marketing for below grade shoring design;
  • Manage client relationships throughout project terms including providing a technical advice; 
  • Manage project schedules and budgets;
  • Liaise with clients, government and/or regulatory bodies as well as contractors; 
  • Play an active role in general business development activities and marketing by establishing and maintaining positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders; 
  • Manage and supervise the day to day operations of the Soil Lab;
  • Approve and sign all lab test results and perform lab testing, when required; 
  • Provide training to existing lab technicians for required soil and asphalt lab testing;  
  • Review and Coordinate Lab Testing with Lab Manager in Ottawa (when required);
  • Be responsible to fully manage lab operations, to maintain consumable material inventory, to repair or replace and calibrate the laboratory equipment, and to minimize waste;
  • Oversee calibration and maintenance of the laboratory equipment and report any deficiencies to the Geotechnical Manager;
  • Assume responsibility for all safety measures in the lab;
  • Coordinate with the Concrete Lab Manager to keep the Lab in a tidy and presentable manner;
  • Coordinate with the RSO for the safety during handling Nuclear Gauges in the Lab;
  • Supervise/monitor laboratory activities to ensure that the work is executed on time and in accordance with the client and project requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards;
  • Oversee lab financials, expenditure, revenue, and profit;
  • Supervise the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that health and safety documents, laboratory protocols, calibration certificates, staff certificates and any other documents needed for lab operation, and will be requested upon each inspection by authorities, are in place and maintained up to date;
  • Collaborate with the Manager to promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices, and;
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.


 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering;
  • Completion of a Master's degree would be considered an asset;
  • Over 8 years of relevant experience working with private and public clients;
  • Professional Engineer designation and in good standing is required;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Commitment to health and safety regulations and desire to contribute to a safe work environment;
  • Willingness to travel out of town temporarily as needed by the project; and
  • Possess a valid G driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
