As a member of our Geotechnical team, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Soils, Aggregate and Asphalt laboratory and perform construction and geotechnical related laboratory testing;
  • Ensure that laboratory personnel are properly trained, supervised and equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to ensure their personal safety in the office and laboratory;
  • Supervise or monitor laboratory activities to ensure that the work is executed on time and in accordance with the client and project requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards;
  • Supervise the efficient utilization of facilities and equipment assigned to his or her area and make requests for additional equipment as needed;
  • Ensure the proper organization and appearance of the laboratory area for which he/she is responsible, including keeping the area and equipment clean and uncluttered;
  • To work efficiently with the team to share the staff between field and the lab and to ensure the assigned work is delivered in an efficient and timely manner;
  • To collaborate with the Geotechnical Division VPs to promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects;
  • Provides supplemental operating policies and procedures unique to the laboratory to ensure that the testing services are accomplished consistent with all applicable standards and the geotechnical team’s quality policy;
  • Ensures that laboratory personnel follow company administrative policies such as time-sheet submission, expense reports, time-off request, etc. when full time personnel assigned to the lab;
  • Provides annual feedback on the cost analysis of laboratory testing cost per test item for each new fiscal year;
  • Evaluates the performance of all employees within the laboratory and assists them in their professional development and growth, consistent with company policies and procedures;
  • Oversees calibration and maintenance of the laboratory equipment;
  • Supervises the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that health and safety documents, laboratory protocols, calibration certificates, staff training certificates and any other documents needed for lab operation are in place and maintained up to date;
  • To oversee lab financials, expenditure, revenue and profit;
  • Preparation and distribution of reports, and liaison with McIntosh Perry’s geotechnical staff and clients;
  • Play an active role in business development activities and marketing by establishing and maintaining positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Work with the management team to continue to grow the laboratory and its service offerings; and
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.



  • Diploma in Civil Technology or related discipline; considered an asset; Secondary School diploma or equivalent combined with relevant experience will also be considered;
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience performing field and/or laboratory tests on construction and geotechnical materials;
  • Relevant CCIL certifications for Aggregate and Asphalt testing;
  • Experience with Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) testing protocols;
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task; in addition to making quick decisions requiring sound judgment and experience;
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite i.e. Excel, Word, and Outlook;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with others;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle that has valid registration and insurance;
  • Ability to travel throughout Ontario as required;
